Frequently asked questions

What file type do I need to upload?

JPEGs, saved as high quality RGB JPEGs (level 8 or above) at baseline standard.

What file size do I need to upload?

We need a file size of over 17MB when uncompressed (this is likely to have a compressed JPEG size of 3-5MB). Opening a JPEG in an image program such as Adobe Photoshop will show you the uncompressed (open) file size.

How do I upload my images to Alamy?

There are two ways you can send your images to Alamy.

  1. FTP (file transfer protocol)

  2. Alamy upload (our web-based online upload tool)

You can get more info on both through the Upload button in My Alamy and by checking out the Sell Images page.

For information on how to send us your keywords, go to the captioning and keywording FAQ section.

How do I upload via FTP?

This is a quick and easy way to send us your images:

1. You’ll need an FTP client. We recommend Filezilla, FirefTP, WinSCP, Cyberduck, or ClassicFTP

2.Enter Alamy’s FTP details into your FTP Client:

  • Host name: upload.alamy.com

  • Login/username: Your Alamy email

  • Port: 21

  • Your password is the same as your Alamy login

3. Drag your images to the relevant folder:

  • Live News (news, sport, entertainment less than 24 hours old)

  • Stock (if it’s your first submission only send 3 images)

  • Archive stock (for all reportage and archival images)

  • Vectors (for all vector files)

How do I upload online?

You can use our web-based online upload tool in My Alamy:

  1. Select Upload and then tick the box for your chosen upload route

  2. Choose JPEGs to upload (either browse files or drag and drop)

  3. Click Finish upload to submit your submission

Once you’ve successfully uploaded your images, they’ll begin to be processed by our Quality Control team.

How many images can I upload at a time?

We need 3 images for your first submission. After that, there are no limits. We want you to submit lots of images, as often as you can.

Once I’ve submitted my images, how long will it take before they’re online?

24 hours on average. We’ll send you an email to let you know when you’ve passed QC and your image s will then be ready for you to annotate in Alamy Image Manager and then they’ll be on sale when the search engine next updates (within 24 hours).

I’ve uploaded the wrong images by mistake, can I delete them?

We can’t delete submissions while they’re in the queue for QC, but don’t worry, when they’ve passed, you can delete them from Alamy Image Manager before they go live on the site.

Can I send you content that is Reportage and/or Archival?

You can apply for Reportage/Archival image upload through your contributor dashboard, or by completing this application form.

Reportage images are photojournalistic images illustrating a story but captured under difficult circumstances and might not pass our standard QC checks. Examples include photo essays or features.

Archival images are images that are historically or culturally significant, examples include film stills, press archives and specialist collections.

What are your guidelines for uploading 360-degree spherical panoramic images?

You can upload 360-degree images to Alamy, provided they fit the following criteria:

  • The images must contain Photosphere XMP metadata.

  • Projection type must be Equirectangular.

  • The image must have an exact 2:1 aspect ratio, as it’s uniformly mapping 360° horizontally and 180° vertically.

  • Maximum compressed file size of 200mb.

  • The image must be free of stitching errors and have little optical distortion, with uniformity in luminosity and colours.

For your first 360-degree upload, we’ll need you to submit 3 images to pass quality control before you can start to upload larger or smaller batches, even if you’ve already got regular stock images on sale.

What can I send?

You can send us images as JPEGs, saved as high quality RGB JPEGs (level 8 or above) at baseline standard. Check out our submission guidelines for more detail.

We accept images taken on a DSLR camera or most popular branded Smartphones that were released in 2020 or later.

If you’re sending Vectors, we require EPS files only. You can send accompanying JPEG files with matching filenames containing the metadata for your Vectors. Please make sure you send the jpegs in the same batch so we can match these up with the vectors.)

What can’t I send?

We don’t accept images generated by Artificial Intelligent (AI) programs. We have an ethical position on our approach to AI imagery which you can read in our blog here.

We also have closed our video application process to individuals. We are currently partnered with Pond5, DepositPhoto and represent the PA Media video collection. We are only opening up the video route to other agencies for now but when we do allow individual contributors to submit video we’ll announce it here
